The release of the EP Maybe You Don’t Know Me, this time on Jacaranda Reocrds continued Surge and company’s blending of high octane alt-country with gentler country-folk moments. The single "You Don't Know Me" was added to SiriusXM Outlaw Country and garnered regular rotation and the EP was also a hit on the Americana Music Association chart as well as garnering rave reviews. “I enjoyed ‘Almost Time’, but I get the feeling that with ‘Maybe You Don’t Know Me’ we’ve not only found the real John Surge, but he’s possibly found himself as a recording artist.” - Red Guitar Music.
David Serby
David Serby is a veteran on the California Country scene having made seven albums over the course of a celebrate 20+ years career. Broken Heart in a Honky Tonk, David Serby's recent release on Jacarana Records, is like a lost Charles Bukowski novel with its star-crossed figures living in this world the best way they know how. There aren’t a lot of happy endings, but the people we meet are compelling, smart, and often self-destructive. There’s also a lot of humor here. It feels light even when dealing with important things. “Humor is foundational in country music,” says Serby. “We’ve always had these broken-hearted characters being self-deprecating. Whether it's Hee Haw or old blues songs that use food as double entendres. People come to country music because it’s good-time music that’s a salve for a broken heart." Perhaps Ripple Music captured it best: "Serby brings us his distinct perspective of real people singing about real people. Active listeners will be rewarded with the thoughtfulness and craftmanship of his lyrics."
