Los Angeles country artist David Serby’s sonically upbeat new album Broken Heart in a Honky Tonk is frontloaded with high-energy shuffles before it moves into more introspective tunes and ends with barroom honky tonks played with a wink, nod, and laugh. He has an adventurous vision for what he does with country music, bringing his own brand of the Bakersfield sound to a modern audience, taking cues from greats like Buck Owens, Merle Haggard, and Dwight Yoakam.

JOHN SURGE AND THE HAYMAKERS
For the follow to full-length LP Almost Time that reached No. 32 on the AMA radio charts, John Surge re-connected with highly regarded Texas producer Tommy Detamore, known for records with Doug Sahm, Jim Lauderdale, Sunny Sweeney and Jesse Daniel. The songs on this EP are ones that didn’t lend themselves to Almost Time but are staples of the band’s live sets. Not only did Surge go back to the well with Detamore, he enlisted most of the same players from the full-length, including his right hand Haymaker guitarist Randy Volin, plus Brennen Leigh on harmony vocals, Brad Fordham (Dave Alvin/Hayes Carll) on bass, Tom Lewis (Junior Brown/Raul Malo) on drums and Floyd Domino (Asleep at the Wheel, Merle Haggard) on keyboards.
